I will discuss how to hit a proper shot through a gap, similar to how Jon Rahm hit his shot through a gap last weekend at the Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin. TX.
The three big keys that I need to play a low punch shot. In this case, I have the added task of keeping the ball between the two trees.
1. Play the ball position off the middle of the stance.
Because I also need to keep this shot low and carry more than 120 yards, I have selected a 2 hybrid. I could also have selected a 4 iron, but I felt more confident keeping it low with the 2.
2. Make sure to extend down the line.
In my pre-shot routine, I will rehearse, keeping the club online toward the target as long as I can. This will ensure that I keep the ball threaded through the trees.
3. Stay Down.
No Peeking! One of the biggest moves that ruin a shot is anxiety! Or in the case of a lot of golfers - lack of trust! Want to have trust? Practice this shot regularly. In my practice sessions, I always include some low, high, fade and draw shots. Realy makes the practice fun!
