Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Follow along as I teach you a real stroke saver. I hit a low punch shot to get out of trouble.

The Punch Shot is a shot saver.  It will help you get out of tricky situations where you need to lower the golf ball's trajectory. In this month's video golf tip, I demonstrate How to Hit a Punch Shot and explain the club selection, setup, and swing aspects of this handy shot. So practice the Punch Shot and make it part of your arsenal of stroke savers to take your game to the next level!

Club Selection.

For a low shot, you need to take a club with minimal loft.  Depending on the distance you need to go, you can use a hybrid, which will keep the ball low and provide many runs.  Or a 4 or 5 iron will also keep the ball low but will not run out as much.

Ball Position.

With the hybrid, the ball position would be slightly further back in the stance than normal The normal ball position for a hybrid is 2" off the lead heel, so for a low shot, maybe 3" back.  You do not want to play a hybrid too far back as the club will be delofted, and you may not even get the ball up in the air.  A smothered shot might result.

With a 4 or 5 iron, play the ball off the middle of the stance. Again, no further back than that for the same reasons discussed for the hybrid.

Method.

Abbreviate the backswing, swing hard, and hit the shot with a much more downward blow.  The follow-through should be abbreviated as well to keep the trajectory of the ball down.  A high follow-through will hit the ball up into the branches.
