Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Watch as I demonstrate the bump and run shot—a great stroke saver for the higher handicapper.

Chip shot, pitch shot, lob shot... what's the difference? In this month's video golf tip, I discuss what makes these shots distinctive.  And introduces the Bump and Run shot, a unique type of chip shot that can help bring down your handicap.

A bump and run is a shot where you would land the ball short of the green. Then, allow the ball to run on.  You would play this shot when you had a fairly smooth surface between you and the green.  If there were a bunker in the way, you would play a pitch, flop, or lob shot.

Club Selection.

With a bump and run, you want to choose a straight-faced club like a 6 or 7 iron.  A lofted club has the danger of landing in the grass short of the green and stopping short.  Now you are faced with another chip.

Technique.

Take your chipping stance and play this like a regular chip, but land the ball short of the green.  There is a bit of guesswork in that you are never sure exactly how far the ball will roll. Therefore, you want to err on the long side.  Allow the ball to go past the hole so that you have a putter in your hand for your next shot and not another chip shot if you leave it short.

Practice this shot to your local chipping green and see how much fun it is when you pull this shot off!  Enjoy!
