Hitting high, soft, and running bunker shots requires a change in equipment and a slight change in technique.   Watch as I demonstrate the three types of shots, low, high, and soft bunker shots.  I also use 3 different clubs for these 3 shots.

The Low, Running Shot.

Here I would use the wedge with the least amount of loft, the 52 degree Gap Wedge with 9 degrees of bounce.  I would play this like a standard bunker shot with one difference.  I will allow my lower hand to cross over my higher hand (commonly called the release), which produces a lower trajectory.  The club's reduced loft will not put a lot of backspin on the ball, allowing it to roll about 20 to 25 feet.

The High Shot.

I am using the lob or 60-degree wedge here.  I play a standard bunker shot but again, with one small difference.  This time I am going to allow my lower hand to stay "under.'  Keeping the clubface facing the sky to allow a higher trajectory.  And this time, the ball will only roll about 5 to 6 feet.

The High Soft Shot.

I need to have a slightly negative shaft lean to add some loft to the club, and I will widen my stance to eliminate body rotation.  The clubhead will pass my hands through impact, with the hips staying still, adding even further loft.  The ball will be a very high shot with plenty of spin.  That ball will stop on a dime!
