Today David Olberding will discuss how to swing on the proper swing plane using a hula hoop.  A great visual aid to help you with your golf swing!

A child's Hula Hoop that you can purchase at Walmart is a great training aid to visualize an inside plane or over-the-top downswing plane.  David Olberding, PGA Instructor and lead instructor at the Mel Sole Golf School, walks you through a clear understanding of this concept!

As David Clearly demonstrates in this video, the swing plane at address with a driver is approximately 45 degrees.  The takeaway should stay on the plane going back so the clubhead will be level with the hands halfway back.  This is what is called "on plane."

The same thing occurs on the downswing.  If the golfer starts the downswing with a spin-out of the hips and shoulders, the club will move "over the top" of the plane, and the shaft angle would get much steeper.  The student can clearly see this if the instructor holds the hula hoop so the student can see exactly what is happening on his downswing and will be able to correct the flaw.
