Today I will discuss how to play the percentages when executing a shot out on the golf course.

First Option.

I am on the par 5 4th hole at Pawleys Plantation, and I have a second shot into the green of about 250 yards.  I could, if I absolutely flushed it, hit my 3 wood to the green.  However, there is a large bunker in front and a long waste bunker all the way down the left.  Closer to the green, the out-of-bounds stakes are not too far away.  So if I try to hit a fade into the green and it does not come off, I might leave myself with a long bunker shot or worse.  So the 3 wood is not really worth the risk.

The Second Option.

The second option would be a 9 iron.  I am 250 yards from the green. I hit my 9 iron 150, so that would leave me with 100 yards into the green.  Not a bad option.

The Third Option.

The third option would be a 2 hybrid that I hit about 220.  That would leave me with about a 30-yard pitch, which I am very comfortable with.  If I don't hit my hybrid perfectly, I might leave myself 40 or 50 yards, a distance I am still comfortable in playing.  The logical choice to give me the biggest percentage of getting a birdie is the 2 hybrid.

Go through this process and give yourself several options.  You know roughly where a good drive lands on each hole on the course you play regularly, so once you have decided your best option, you will always know the club you will hit and not have to go through this process every time!  Play the percentages to lower your scores!
