Today David Olberding will discuss keeping the club on the correct plane on the downswing using two alignment sticks as aids.

To get the correct understanding of the swing plane, take an alignment stick, and stick it into the small hole in the grip's back.  This will now extend the club.  Place another alignment stick directly behind the ball on the target line.  Take your normal address position, and then take your backswing.  At the top of the backswing, the alignment stick should be pointing at the ground's alignment stick.  If not, move it until it is.  This is the correct swing plane for you.

On the downswing, start with a slight bump of the hips laterally.  You will notice that the alignment stick on the club will flatten out slightly.  The alignment stick on the club should be aiming slightly below the stick on the ground.  This will allow the clubhead to come into the ball more from the inside, and the over-the-top move will be no more.  Do not try and hit shots with the alignment stick attached to the golf club.  This is for visual purposes only.

Once you understand the backswing and downswing plane, remove the stick and hit some balls to attain the same feel.
