Today, David Olberding, lead instructor at the Mel Sole Golf School, talks about choosing the correct line on a breaking putt. By using a visual aid, you can get quicker results.

My instructor, David Olberding, is a visual learner.  So it did not surprise me when he wanted to do today's blog not only about putting but putting with visual aids.  David set up a small hula hoop below the hole.  This depicted the NO-Go Zone!  He did not want to allow the ball to get below the hole because it has absolutely no chance of going in from there.

After hitting a few putts, he determined that the line was 24" above the cup.  So at about 20 feet out, he put two alignment sticks aimed at the tee in the ground.  The whole goal of this drill is to teach yourself to hit breaking putts at the right speed.

The Method.

Set up with your putter perpendicular to the alignment sticks and hit the putt.  You can now proceed to hit each putt a little harder or a little softer, depending on the last result. Eventually, your subconscious will get the correct feel, and not only will the putts now start to finish a lot closer to the hole, but some will go in.

The point here is not necessarily to hole every putt but to teach yourself great touch.  So when you have a putt like this on the course, you will be able to cozy the ball right up to the hole!
