Today, David Olberding, lead instructor at the Mel Sole Golf School,  walks you through the difference between a pitch shot and a lob shot.

The Set-Up.

The normal ball position for a pitch shot is about 2" inside the lead heel. There would be a neutral or slightly forward shaft lean. This will produce an average trajectory and quite a lot of roll.

The ball position for the flop is more of the lead heel, and the shaft lean would be slightly back or negative. Weight is even front to back foot.  Open the clubface about 10 degrees and open the stance 10 degrees.  This open stance will encourage a slightly out-to-in clubhead path, which creates more backspin.  This will produce a high trajectory and quite a lot of spin to make the ball check-up very quickly.

Spend a little bit of time on the range to get comfortable with this method before trying it out on the course.

The Technique.

Hinge the backswing quite quickly and rehinge on the follow-through. Letting the clubhead pass the hands.  Very similar to a bunker shot. Keeping the lower body very quiet on the backswing.
