This month we talk about your 15th club in the bag - a yardage book!  Yes, you can save several shots in a round of golf by knowing distances to hazards, where out-of-bounds lines are, etc.  You will NEVER see a PGA or LPGA Tour player hit a shot without first discussing the shot with their caddie.  The caddie will always refer to their yardage book, which has the distances and some notes about that particular player.

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.

Why do you need a Yardage Book?

A yardage book is so useful when you play a golf course for the first time.  When I went over to Scotland and then Ireland for the first time, I would go into the Pro Shop and purchase a yardage book.  Even if I had a caddie, I still had a yardage book.  I wanted to see where the hazards were and exact yardages to fairway bunkers or areas I needed to avoid.

Later on, I collected yardage books of courses I have played over the years in Scotland and Ireland.  Whenever I go back to those courses, I take my yardage books with me.

What does a Yardage book do?

Exactly that!  It gives me accurate yardages.  And I can see at a glance if the hole is a dogleg, and I have to drive the ball to a particular part of the fairway to be in a better position to hit the next shot to the green.

There is usually a Preface by the golf course architect, giving you his ideas on the course.  And an introduction by the Head Pro telling you how to play the course.

So the next time you play a course for the first time, head to the Pro Shop and get The 15th Club in the Bag - A Yardage Book!
