The most important factor in playing the lob shot ( or flop shot) is commitment! This is not a shot for the faint-hearted! If you watch the top players in the world at this shot, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and John Daly have big backswings and full follow-throughs!
The Method!
Start by laying the clubface wide open and then take your grip. If you take your grip first, there is a tendency to try and open the clubface by rotating the forearms, and when you play the shot, the forearms will return to their normal position, square the club-face, and you will hit this shot too far!
Have the ball position well forward in your stance and widen the width of your stance. The wider, the better. This prevents the body from rotating too quickly. The clubhead will pass the hands at impact, giving a negative shaft lean and adding even more loft to the shot.
When you first practice this shot, do it on the driving range so that it will go harmlessly down the range if you miss-hit the shot. As I said earlier, make a big backswing and a full follow-through. Once you have mastered this, you will have another shot to add to your growing number of great short game shots learned at the Mel Sole Golf School!
