Two weeks ago, on Training Aid Tuesday, I spoke about a training aid that helps you stay on plane on the backswing.  This week I want to discuss keeping the golf club on plane on the downswing.

The key to this move is to make sure you start the downswing by dropping the trail elbow tight into the body.  This is how to keep the golf club on plane on the downswing. The elbow should move in front of the trail hip.  This keeps the distance between the body and the arm constant. That will lead to putting the clubface on the back of the ball more consistently.

In the video below, Ben Hogan demonstrates how to keep the golf club on plane on the downswing!  The part of this video I want you to pay attention to is the trail elbow position on the downswing.  You will notice that it is in front of his trail hip, and all the angles present at the top of the swing are still present halfway down.  The downswing is started with the lower body, and all those angles are retained on the way down.  The centrifugal force releases the club and not trying to create speed with the hands and arms.

Study this sequence carefully, as this is the best video I have ever seen on the correct downswing sequence!
