The biggest key to chipping is controlling distance.  Flying the ball in the air the right distance and choosing a club that will give you the correct amount of roll are both ingredients to becoming a good chipper. Class A PGA Instructor with the Mel Sole Golf School David Olberding uses a Hula Hoop to visualize the correct landing spot. Landing the ball in the Hula Hoop and seeing the ball finish at the correct distance also confirms to David that he has chosen the correct club for this shot.

It is not necessary to use a Hula Hoop, but any target will work just as well.  Use a coin, a scorecard, or a tee on the ground. This is also a drill that you can do at home on the front lawn.  The key is airtime.  The ball roll does not matter unless you are chipping on a chipping green at the golf course.  Work on a good feel, and you will become a good chipper!
