Today I will discuss how to hit lag putts consistently close to the hole, giving you a better chance of success and eliminating three-putting!

First of all, when you practice putting long putts, use the balls that you normally play with.  Do not use range balls.  The feel is totally different.  And because feeling is the entire object of this exercise, you are defeating the purpose of using range balls.

Use between 12 and 15 balls for this drill.  Place the balls about 20 to 30 feet from your target hole.  Go into your address position with the putter behind the ball.  Now, look at the hole.  Do not look at the ball.  Hit the putt.  This might feel strange at first but persevere. This is important.  Hit all balls looking at the hole.  When you are finished, hit another group in a different direction with about the same length.

Shooting Hoops with a Putter!

This is the same principle as a basketball player shooting hoops.  He looks at the rim and shoots.  If the shot is too soft, the next one is harder.  If the shot is too hard, the next one is softer.  Do the same with these long putts.  Every putt is an adjustment to the previous putt.

On the course, the routine is different.  Do you practice swings looking at the hole to get the feel needed for the putt, but once you walk into the ball to hit the putt, you are looking at the ball.

This is the way you teach your subconscious to feel.  Do this for a few minutes before the start of each round, and your percentage of three-putts will drop dramatically!
