Today we discuss how to create lag in the downswing, which is crucial to getting the maximum distance for every shot!

The lag is the angle between the lead arm and the shaft on the downswing.  Most amateurs "cast" and lose that angle quite quickly.  To keep the lag, you must have really soft hands.  Soft grip pressure is critical.  On a scale of 1 to 10, with one being ultra-loose and 10 being as tight as you can hold it, the correct grip pressure when swinging a golf club should be between a 3 or a 4. No tighter!

As I have spoken about in other blogs, the wrist cock should happen naturally with the soft grip pressure allowing the club's momentum cocking the wrists at the top of the swing.  It is critical to start the downswing with the lower body shifting the weight from the rear foot to the front foot as rapidly as possible.  This lower body move then helps create the lag you are looking for in the golf swing.  Keep the hands out of the downswing altogether!
