Keeping the angle between the lead arm and the shaft is one of the most difficult things to do for most amateurs.  The main reason is they want to start the downswing, trying to create speed with the arms. Unfortunately, this has exactly the opposite effect of what the good golfer is trying to achieve.

Why lag?

Creating lag in the golf swing means maintaining the angle between the lead arm and the shaft.  Starting from the top of the backswing.  You are losing the critical angle when you speed up your arms on the downswing.  And all clubhead speed is dissipated before impact occurs.

How to achieve it?

You create lag in the golf swing by doing various drills.  One is the pump drill (see Related Posts below), and the other is grip pressure.  Light grip pressure will help tremendously in creating soft wrists and allow the lag to occur naturally.

On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being as tight as you can hold the club and one as loose as you can hold it, the pressure at the top of the backswing should be a 3!

The key here, and very well described by Andy Proudman of Meandmygolf, is to start the downswing with the lower body and feel like the arms are being left behind.
