Monthly Golf Tips from the Mel Sole Golf School

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC.  We conduct 1, 2, and 3-day golf schools, hourly golf lessons, and senior golf schools—any golf instruction program your heart desires. Give us a call at 800-624-4653 or 843-237-4993.  We will be happy to book a commuter school or a package that contains accommodations, golf, and golf school.

This month's tip request comes from Wendy Morris of Pawleys Island, who asks, "How do female golfers get more distance?"

This is a common question asked at the golf school, and there are three parts to this article. 1. The Start of the Downswing.  2. The Lag.  And 3. The Full Follow-Through!

Last month was How Do Female Golfers Get More Distance? Part 1, read this first.

The Start of the Downswing

The downswing must be started with the lower body by shifting the weight to the front foot with a slight lateral move forward of the hips, as Jenny Buchanan demonstrates here in picture #1.

Any attempt to start the downswing with the arms will cause the hands to uncock the wrists too soon (called "casting"), and a loss of power will result. Go here to see a drill to prevent casting.

The Lag.

It is easier to hold the angle between the shaft and the forearm if the downswing is started with the lower body.  See Jenny in pic #2.

Losing this angle is the biggest cause of power loss in high handicap golfers.

Full Follow-Through.

Finish the swing!  Too many lady golfers do not complete the follow-through.  The hands should finish well over the lead shoulder with the hips facing the target.  The golfer should be able to pick up the back foot and not lose her balance!
