Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

This month I talk about a drill that my long-time mentor and friend Phil Ritson taught me over 30 years ago.  It made a huge difference to my game, and it can make a difference in yours as well. Check it out!

Why is it called the "Dagger Drill?"

This was a phrase coined by my friend and mentor, Phil Ritson, over 30 years ago.  During the drill, you "dagger" the butt end of the club at the ball.  This ensures that the angle between the lead arm and the shaft remains the same for as long as possible.  When this angle is release due to centrifugal force, the clubhead speed is amazing!

How to do the drill!

Go to the top of the backswing.  As you start the downswing, shift your weight to the front foot while holding the angle between the shaft and the lead arm.  Keep this angle as long as you can.  Start a back and forth motion for the top of the backswing to about halfway down.  This is what I call the pumping motion.  Do 2 pumps, keep the shaft above parallel to the ground, and ensure the clubhead is behind the hands.  Do NOT let the clubhead drift in front of the hands, as this will cause you to come across the ball, causing a slice or a pull depending on the clubface angle at impact.  On the 3rd pump, swing all the way through.

Do this drill regularly, and you will slowly see an increase in distance.
