 There are certain things you have to take into account before you play the shot. 

When the ball is above the green, the flag is below the ball. So that the ball will roll a lot further than normal, there will also be minimal spin on such a short shot, so expect more roll than normal. It takes a deft touch to land the ball just on the green and make the ball come off the clubface very softly.  The trick is to grip the club very softly.  On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very tight, the grip pressure should be between a 2 and a 3.

Spend a lot of time practicing this shot because this will teach you how to hit other shots around the green softly.
