Today I respond to a request from Leslie Buchanan of Charlottesville, VA, a long-time student who asks about a downhill chip shot to a green below the ball's level. Here you are, Leslie, enjoy!
A downhill chip shot with the green below the ball's level is a touch shot most of the time. If you have a nice fluffy lie and a lob wedge in your bag, you can get this close. However, don't try and be too cure. A shot 10 to 15 feet past the hole will be a good result even for a good player.
Technique.
On sloping lies, always play the ball of the highest foot. In this case, the back foot. Take the club in your bag with the most loft. In my case, the lob wedge or 60-degree wedge. Set your body perpendicular to the slope and keep the clubhead traveling down the slope as long as possible. Hold the clubface square through impact to try and get the maximum amount of loft on the shot. There will not be a lot of spin on a shot like this, so allow for some run-out and land the ball accordingly. Sometimes you try to land the ball just on the fringe to take some of the speed off.
