Because we play this great game of golf on different terrain each time we play, it is important to understand how to execute shots around the green from different lies. Last week I spoke about a pitch from an uphill lie and emphasized the importance of playing the ball off the highest foot. Today we learn exactly the opposite. A Pitch from a Downhill lies on the Golf Course.
The Method.
Make sure the ball position is towards the back foot. This will allow you to strike the ball first with a slightly downward blow. The key here is to allow the club to follow the slope. Any attempt to Lift the ball will result in a "skulled" or bladed shot. (this is a shot that is hit with the leading edge of the club). To do this, you will need a slight bending of the knees as the club strikes the ball. Keep the club low through impact for a nice high, soft shot that will land on the green very softly.
Keep the clubface facing the sky as you do this. Head to a driving range and try this shot to understand how hard to swing to make the ball go different distances. Lengthen the backswing. If you need the ball to go further, don't swing harder. This is a finess shot, so keep the grip pressure nice and soft, and you will add another great short game shot to your arsenal of shots learned at the Mel Sole Golf School!
