We have discussed a pitch from an uphill lie and a downhill lie in the past two weeks.  Today we talk about a pitch from a sidehill lie with the ball above your feet. This is another shot where you will have to find an area on the practice range to work on this shot.  Hitting many shots from this position will help build confidence in your ability to hit this shot when faced with it on the golf course.  In particular, how hard to hit the shot.  Usually, you are not going to get a lot of backspin on this type of shot.  Allow for some run of the golf ball.

The Method.

When taking your stance, try and make sure you are standing in a normal posture before you grip the club.  Then grip the club and have a few practice swings making sure the bottom of the arc matches where the ball is in your stance.  If you are hitting slightly behind where the ball is, grip the club slightly shorter, and if you are missing the ground, grip the club slightly longer.

Also, aim slightly to the right.  The tendency is to pull this shot, so aiming to the right will take care of that.

Try different clubs to see which trajectory suits your type of motion.  Some golfers like to use a Lob Wedge or Sand Wedge and pitch it up high in the air.  Others prefer a low-running shot.  I think it depends on how much green you have to work with.  I always feel the smaller the backswing, the less chance I have of hitting a poor shot.

Work on this until you feel comfortable with the shot, and you will be glad you added another shot to your growing arsenal of short game shots learned at the Mel Sole Golf School!
