Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Last month, I gave you tips for improving shots on uphill and downhill lies. In this month's installment of Mel in Motion, I share the secrets of dealing with sidehill lies, shots where the ball is either above or below your feet. Club selection and swing technique both play a part. Watch this video golf tip to learn more.

Ball Below the feet.

When the ball is below the feet, bend over more from the waist a little more.  Do not bend your knees in this instance.  When bending from the waist, make sure you take a few practice swings and check that you are brushing the grass with the club's sole.  This is telling you that you are staying in your posture and not coming up.  Coming up will cause you to either top the ball or at least hit a thin shot.  The ball will tend to curve to the right (for right-handed golfers.)

Ball Above the feet.

When the ball is above the feet, take your normal posture position and grip the club shorter.  Again, by doing a few practice swings before hitting the shot, you will see where the club is striking the ground.  If you are missing the ground completely, don't grip the club so short. Instead, lengthen it a little bit. The ball will tend to curve to the left (for right-handed golfers.)

If you are striking the ground behind where the ball is positioned, grip the club slightly shorter.  Keep making practice swings and length adjustments until you are striking the ground right where the ball is.  Then go ahead and make a normal swing.

Easy Tip.

One easy way to figure out which way the ball is going to curve.  Stand facing the target and roll the ball along the ground towards that target.  Whichever way the ball curves on the ground is how the ball is going to curve in the air!
