Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Many golfers, including low handicappers, aren't sure how to play the ball from uphill and downhill lies. You can avoid bad shots on uneven lies, however, if you follow a few basic principles. In this month's Mel in Motion video golf tip, Mel dissects the proper swing mechanics and club selection for dealing with those confusing uneven lies.

Uphill Lies.

One clue as to where to put your weight at the address and where to put the ball position is this.  Weight is on the lower foot.  The ball is towards the upper foot. During the swing, the weight stays on the back foot.  This will tend to make you pull the ball so aim to the right (for right-handed golfers) and the least (for left-handed golfers). Because you are hitting on the upswing, the ball will go higher than normal.  Take an extra club.

Downhill lies.

One clue as to where to put your weight at the address and put the ball position is the same as the uphill lie. Weight is on the lower foot.  The ball position is towards the upper foot. This will make you push the ball so aim to the left (for right-handed golfers) and the right (for left-handed golfers). Because you are hitting on the downswing, the ball will go lower than normal.  Take one less club.
