Last week, we discussed chipping from an area above the green level, so of course, today, we discuss chipping to a green above the green level.  You have two options, go with the high lob or go with the bump and run.  Find out which one suits you right here!

This shot has two options.

  1. Take the lob wedge to fly the ball all the way to the green.  To do that, I need to walk all the way to the area where I want to land the ball, turn around and look back at where my ball is.  Now do some practice swings.  Try to judge how hard I would swing to fly the ball all the way back to my ball position.  Once I have that feeling, I can walk back to my ball, do another few practice swings that are the same as I rehearsed, just on the green, and play the shot.  If I fly the ball the right distance, the ball will land on my spot and roll towards the hole.
  2. Play a bump and run shot. Take a 6 or 7 iron and land the ball short of the green.  If you are not good at that pitch shot, this is a much safer shot.  Land the ball five or six feet short of the green.  The slope will break the speed, and after one or two bounces short of the green, it will roll nicely onto the green.

Both these shots take a little bit of practice to train your eye to know exactly how hard to swing. Definitely worth spending the time!
