PGA and long-time Mel Sole Golf School instructor David Olberding talked about a shot that has plagued his own golf swing for quite a while and what he did to overcome his problem finally.

At the top of the backswing, the golf club's leading edge should be about 45 degrees to the ground.  Another way of looking at it is that the club's leading edge should parallel the lead arm and wrist.  However, there is a tendency for some golfers to cup the wrist at the top of the backswing.  Causing the golf club's toe to point down to the ground, and the club's leading edge is closer to 90 degrees to the ground.

This will cause an open clubface at impact, and the ball will either go out to the right or slice.  To hit the ball straight, the lead wrist needs to be flat.  Not only at the top of the backswing but at impact!

There is a teaching aid that we use at the Mel Sole Golf School called a Wrist Tac-Tic.  When attached to the lead wrist, it gives an audible click if the wrist is in the wrong position.  This gives great feedback to the student who cannot see the wrist position at the top of their backswing, and the problem is quickly resolved!
