Today I talk about understanding when a ball is in bounds or out of bounds.

"Out of bounds" refers to those areas outside the golf course that do not allow play.  Or any area designated as out of bounds by the committee. The committee will mark out of bounds in some way.  Often with the use of white stakes or some barrier like a fence or a wall.

The penalty for out of bounds is usually stroke and distance.

In this video, I show a piece of string that the line marking the out-of-bounds is taken on the outside of the out-of-bounds stakes.  In other words, the stake itself is out of bounds.

However, if the ball's slightest piece is touching that line, then the ball is in bounds.  In this video, almost all the ball is out of bounds.  But because I can see a little sliver of the ball on the correct side of the line, that has made my day, and I can go ahead and play my shot.

If an out-of-bounds stake interferes with my swing, I cannot move the stake because it is technically not part of the golf course.
