Hitting a high soft bunker shot is executed differently than your average bunker shot. In this month's video golf tip, I explain how to eliminate hip movement and discuss stance and ball position to help you master the high soft bunker shot.

The Setup.

Set your feet quite wide apart.  This is because you want to quieten the body rotation that normally takes place in a bunker shot.  Play the ball a little more forward in the stance as well.  Almost off the lead toe!

The Technique.

Because of the wide stance and due to lack of body rotation, the clubhead will pass the hands through impact.  This adds loft to the club as the clubhead slides smoothly under the ball. The divot should be quite shallow, putting some additional spin on the ball.  This high shot stops on a dime.

As a result, you must swing a lot harder than you normally would for the same distance shot because of an increase in the loft.

Even at the end of the shot, both feet should be flat on the ground.  Certainly, this is a total deviation from a conventional bunker shot.  It requires quite a bit of practice to build confidence in the shot.
