Golfers who struggle with their chipping are the subject of today's blog.  With the use of an alignment stick, you can use this to improve your chipping.

Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC. Follow along and learn to improve your chipping technique.

The club should move straight back and straight through.

Ideally, when chipping, the clubhead should move back and through in an arc.  However, I see students moving the backswing too much on the inside when they attempt that move.  So, imagine that you are swinging the clubhead straight back and straight through and let the arc take care of itself.

How to aim.

By placing an alignment stick on the ground and aiming it slightly to the right of the hole, you will be aiming the clubface directly at the hole.  Let the toe of the club swing along the alignment stick both back and through.

How to monitor the clubface angle at impact.

The final skill set to master is to chip the ball on the intended line.  If you use the alignment stick, you know for sure that your are aim is correct.  So if the ball travels left or right of the target, it will tell you the clubface angle at impact.  Continue to work on this motion, making small corrections on each shot until you have the ability to chip the ball on the correct line most of the time!

This is an area that I love to work on.  I know just how many strokes I am going to save around the green.  These shots do not require a lot of clubhead speed or fancy techniques like a full swing.  Anyone can develop a great short game.

So head to the practice green and develop Short Game Saturday #67 Chipping and see your scores come tumbling down!
