Today we discuss when the ball is outside the bunker in thick rough, but I have to stand inside the bunker.  Good footing is important.  And a practice swing can determine where the bottom of the arc is.  This prevents hitting this shot fat or thin!

Finding the bottom of the arc.

When you have troubleshot anywhere on the course, always have a few practice swings.  This helps to determine where the bottom of the arc is going to occur.  I have to stand in a bunker in this instance, and the ball is above my feet.  It is critical to determine that point.  By doing a few practice swings, I now know exactly where the bottom of my arc will occur.  And reduce the chances of a poor shot.

Finding good footing.

Because I am standing in a bunker with very soft sand, the chances are high that my feet might slip during this shot's execution. I want to be careful not to dig my feet in too deep because that can be construed as building a stance.  And that is a penalty.  There is a fine line here between fairly taking my stance and breaking the rules.   I will feel during my practice swings how stable my feet feel.  I am not going to hit this shot too hard, so I think I'm safe.

Executing the shot.

The problem I face during the shot's execution is that because of the thick rough, the club might get stuck, and in an attempt to keep the club moving through impact, I might double hit the ball.  Another penalty shot!  So, in the end, I decided to play a shot with a very abbreviated follow-through to eliminate the change of the double hit.

You can see that many thoughts had to go into this shot, and I didn't even talk about club selection.  A lofted club would work best to get the ball away from the long grass as soon as possible.  I was quite happy to get this ball safely onto the putting surface!
