Today we discuss the procedure for dropping the ball off a cart path. We all know that we need to drop at the nearest point of relief. However, you cannot automatically assume that because the ball is closer to one side of the cart path than the other, that this is the side you are going to take relief. The Rule.
When your ball lands on a cart path, you are entitled to free relief in most cases (Not always. It Depends on the Course.) That free relief is usually what we call NPR. Nearest Point of Relief. Most people assume that because the ball is lying closer to one side of the cart path than the other, that is the side where relief can be taken. Not so fast!
The Procedure.
To determine where the NPR is, you have to measure. Take your stance on one side of the cart path and stand where you are not touching the cart path at all but fairly close. Put a tee in the ground where the ball would be. Now take your stance on the other side of the cart path and take your stance where you are completely free of the cart path. Again put a tee in the ground where the ball would be. Measure which tee is the closest to the ball. Now you have your nearest point of relief.
The Drop.
If the drop is free (no penalty), you are allowed under the rules of golf to drop the ball within one club-length of the drop point. Again, put two tees in the ground to demarcate that area. Now look for the nicest area to drop (free of holes and thick grass if possible) and take the drop.
