Today we talk about the difference between an arcing or straight back straight through putting stroke.  The great putters of the past used an arcing stroke, whereas the modern players use a straight back straight through method.  Is this because of equipment or the surfaces we're putting on?  Comments, please.

The question on Short Game Saturday #65 is, "Which stroke is better?  Straight back and straight through or an arcing stroke?"

Arcing Stroke.

All the great putters of all time had an arcing stroke.  But I think this was because most of the putters of the day were blade putters, so you did not have the selection you have today.  I must admit, you would have to go a long way to find better putters in history than Bobby Locke, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Brad Faxon, or Lorne Roberts.  All of these players had an arcing putting stroke.

Straight Back and Straight Through.

Players of the more modern era have a more straight back straight through stroke because the putter's of today has more center shaft models, and a lot of them have a high MOI (moment of inertia) which keeps the putter blade square, even on miss-hits.

Which is the right putter and putting stroke for you?  Trial and Error!  Take several putters to the putting green over several days and try blade putter and an arcing stroke and center shafted putters and a straight back straight through stroke.  Which one feels more normal?  Which one feels more comfortable?  And most importantly, which one sinks more putts?  Then you will have your answer.  Enjoy the Journey!
