Using the ground - Technical Thursday #21.

Today we discuss gaining power with the driver. Using ground force to increase clubhead speed is the secret here!

The first time I noticed a golfer using the ground to generate speed was Rory McIlroy. 

Rory certainly wasn't the first, but watching Rory was the first time I saw something different in his swing.  It was so noticeable that I want to start work immediately on this motion myself.  And almost immediately, I noticed I started to hit the ball further.  It was amazing.  I had Rory's swing on my computer, and when watching in slow motion, I noticed a significant change in his belt buckle as he started his downswing. 

The Squat.

There was a slight downward movement to start the downswing.  I came to learn it is called "the squat." And then a powerful thrust upward.  His belt buckle was at least 5 inches higher at impact than at address, and he rotated his hips a good 60 degrees more.  Astonishing hip speed.  And here was this little guy pounding the ball further than most guys on tour.

So, work on the "Squat and thrust" move and, as I say in the video, ignore the results in the beginning.  Just swing way as hard as you can.  As the timing adjusts, you will love your newfound distance!
