Today I talk about playing in the wind.  The big secret here is your mental attitude before you even play the first hole.  I always love the conditions you are playing. That way, you are a shot or two ahead of the opposition before you even start! I talk about the most important aspect of playing in the wind - attitude!

Attitude.

I learned this from Gary Player a long time ago, early on in my career.  No matter what the situation, you cannot change it.  You can only change your attitude towards the situation.  So no matter what conditions you are playing in, wind, rain, cold, or heat - love the conditions, and you will be two or three shots ahead even before you put the tee in the ground.

Ball position.

If you are hitting directly into the wind, move the ball slightly back from your normal position and then swing normally.  Don't TRY and hit the ball low. If you are hitting in a crosswind, then don't fight the wind.  Aim to allow the wind to bring the ball back to your target.  On windy days, particularly when you have a crosswind on the range, hit balls to see how much the wind influences that ball flight.  You can use that info the next time you play in a crosswind!

Club selection.

If you do not want to move the ball back in your stance, take less loft.  Take one or maybe even two clubs less.  There is truth to the saying, "When it's breezy, swing easy."
