This week, I am responding to an email from a Mel Sole Golf School Blogs follower, John Rheis.  He asked the question, "How do I attain better lag of the club on the downswing?"

The first secret to Getting the Lag you are Looking For! is soft grip pressure.  Most golfers grip the club way too hard. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very tight and 1 being very loose, my grip pressure is about a 3 for almost all golf shots. This pressure should be the same throughout the golf swing, not tightening on the backswing or downswing.

The second secret is starting the downswing with the lead side.  Most golfers start the downswing with the arms, losing the lead arm and shaft angle. By keeping the grip pressure soft and starting the downswing with the lead side, the lead arm and shaft angle is automatically attained. This allows the hands to pass the ball before impact, attaining "forward shaft lean," which is essential to hitting the ball further.  Centrifugal force releases the club at the bottom of the swing.  This achieves maximum speed right where it is needed - at the moment of impact!

Try this on the driving range before heading out to the course.  One of the movements that will help maintain a soft grip pressure is the waggle.  Most top players have a waggle before they start the backswing.  This really helps keep the grip pressure constant!
