Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

The key to improving your consistency on the putting green is having a great pre-shot routine. In this video golf tip, Mel demonstrates a routine that can help you develop putting and chipping consistency.

Why a Pre-Shot Routine?

A Pre-Shot Routine helps with your consistency.  In doing the same routine over and over again, the body not only gets comfortable and used to that routine, but the rhythm that the pre-shot routine sets up is vital to your confidence. In addition, your body knows when the hit is coming, so there is no uncertainty in the shot.

The Basics.

There are a few basics that are important to include n a pre-shot routine.

Reading the green.  Definitely a part of the routine.  Read the green the same way each time. If you watch the PGA and LPGA players, they do a 360-degree wank around the hole, squat behind the hole to get a final look, and then take their stance, do their practice swings, step into the ball and stroke the putt.  Each of them does it slightly differently, but they all do it their own way every time!

I like to look past the hole when I'm doing my practice swings.  This allows me never to leave my putts short.  I do three practice swings.  Never two.  Never four.  When I step into the ball, I never look up at the hole. Instead, I put my putter behind the ball, align the line on my putter with the line on the ball (which I have aligned to my target line) and make the stroke.  I totally trust that my alignment is correct.  There is not one iota of doubt in my mind.

Do I make every putt? Absolutely not.  But do I ake my fair share of putts?  Yes.  By always doing my pre-shot routine, I hope to keep it that way for many years to come!
