Hi, I’m Mel Sole, Director of Instruction at the Mel Sole Golf School, headquartered at Pawleys Plantation Golf and Country Club in Pawleys Island, SC. In his prime, Johnny Miller was the best iron player on Tour. He would annoy some players on tour because he would hit an iron shot, and while the ball was still in the air, he would tip his cap! Now that's confidence!
I talk about moving the sternum forward and in front of the ball by the impact position in my teaching. What Johnny Miller is saying about the shoulder is the same thing! Hanging back is never a good thing, so it does not matter what part of the body you think of. Make sure the lead side moves forward on the downswing. As Johnny says, it takes the left side (for right-handed golfers) out of the equation on every shot.
Return your left shoulder to its starting position for shots that never leave the flag, as demonstrated by Golf Magazine contributor Johnny Miller.
