Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

The key to more distance is more clubhead speed. To gain that, you have to do certain things.  Wide-arc and soft hands are something you can do to gain yards almost immediately!

The Technique.

Start by standing in your address position. Slowly start swinging the club back and through, trying NOT to cock your wrists on the backswing.  Keep the line formed by your left arm (for right-handed golfers) and the shaft straight. You can check this by looking at where the butt of the club is pointing.  When you are halfway back, the butt of the club should be pointing at your body.  If it is pointing downward, you are cocking your wrist too soon.  Be aware that your grip pressure is very soft.  As you reach the top of your backswing, let the club's momentum cock your writs naturally.  This will allow you to create a lot of lag on the downswing, which adds to the clubhead speed you are looking for.

In Conclusion, practice this at home as many times as possible to get the feel of the hands being ultra-light on the grip.  Let your backswing arc be as wide as possible.  Remember, for every 1 mph, you add to your clubhead speed. You add 2.5 yards in distance.  You should start seeing results almost immediately! Watch this video to get the idea of letting the wrists cock on their own, then start the downswing without changing the grip pressure.
