Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

One of the keys to becoming a better golfer is learning to control the distance of the golf ball.  Jack Nicklaus said, "Trajectory helps control distance." So he worked tirelessly on having the trajectory of all his club's peak at the same height.

This skill will get you out of numerous difficult situations on the course. I share the secrets of trajectory control in this month's video golf tip, from ball position to follow through.

Why is trajectory important?

Trajectory controls distance consistency.  By hitting all the shots peaking at the same height, the downward trajectory is consistent, and therefore the roll is consistent.

Ball Position.

To change the trajectory of the shot, don't change your swing. Just change the ball position.  Want to hit the ball a little lower because of a tree branch or hitting into the wind?  Move the ball slightly back in your stance.  If you want to hit the ball higher because of a tree in the way or hitting a driver downwind, move the ball slightly more forward in your swing.

Follow-Through.

The follow-through will certainly influence the trajectory.  If I want to hit the ball low, I will abbreviate the follow-through.  And have more of a driving motion through the ball.  My arms would not finish above shoulder height.  If I want a really high shot, I exaggerate the follow-through and finish all the way through with a very high finish.
