Many golfers have trouble with fairway bunkers. Two common problems are "fat" shots (getting under the ball) and, on the flip side, trying to "pick it clean."
In this month's Mel In Motion video golf tip, Mel shares the truth about how to play fairway bunkers.
The Method.
In a fairway bunker, I suggest you play the shot exactly like a fairway shot. Use the same club you would normally use from the fairway. There is only one minor difference. Move the ball slightly back in your stance. About 1" further back than you normally would. This ensures that you will strike the ball first and eliminate the "fat" shot. Thus, you will strike the ball first, ensuring good contact and correct distance. Correct Fairway bunker Strategy will get you out of trouble every time!
The Execution.
Try not to change anything! The swing should remain the same. The tempo should remain the same. And the club selection should remain the same. The old saying of KISS. Keep it Simple Stupid is apropos here. A full follow-through is imperative to get the maximum distance out of your shot. This is an instance of playing No Fear Golf!
Practicing out of a fairway bunker not only improves your fairway bunker shots but improves your iron play immensely. Compressing the ball correctly is something you will learn by practicing out of a fairway bunker. Gary Player used to practice his iron shots on a beach to improve his iron play!
