Monthly Golf Tips by the Mel Sole Golf School.

Teeing up on the wrong side of the tee box is a common error. In this month's video golf tip, Mel Sole provides the easy-to-remember strategy that will help you put the ball in play consistently and give you the advantage.

Which Side of the Tee Box?

Follow this one simple rule for Tee Box Strategy - Take The Advantage!.  Always tee up on the side of the trouble. For example, if the trouble is on the right-hand side of the fairway, tee up on the right-hand side.  That way, you are always aiming slightly away from the trouble instead of at it.  Also, take into consideration the length of the hole.  If it is not a long hole, hitting an iron or a 3 wood off the tee might place the ball in the fairway.  Even though you have a slightly longer shot into the green, you are hitting from the fairway!

One of my strategies on par 5 holes as I've gotten older and can no longer reach the par 5's in two is to hit a 3 or 4 iron off the tee, another 3 or 4 iron down the fairway. Then usually leave me with a fairly easy third with a sand wedge or gap wedge into the green.  I might not make as many birdies as I used to, but now I don't make as many bogies either!

Look at the shorter par 4's and the par 5's on your course and decide if a tee box strategy would make a difference to your handicap?
