Today I will discuss how to hit a 3 wood properly off the ground by ensuring that you hit down and get a little divot instead of sweeping the ball off the ground.

The key to hitting a 3 wood is NOT to sweep the ball like a driver.  The 3 wood is a slightly downward blow, and there should be a very shallow divot after the shot.  The thing that is going to help make that happen is the ball position.  Use an alignment stick and place it at 90 degrees to the alignment stick on the ground helping you with alignment.  Your ball position should be directly off your lead heel.

If the weight shift is correct, you will catch the ball very slightly on the downswing, creating a small divot.  The contact should be clean and solid.  The ball will go sailing down the fairway!

A good practice drill at home is swinging the club and just brushing the grass each time.  This is confirming to you that you are controlling the bottom of the arc.  A skill that is critical to being a good fairway wood player!
