After watching both the Senior British Open and the Ladies Scottish Open, I decided to explain how to play a shot I saw quite often in both these tournaments.  Check it out!

When your ball is sitting against the collar between the fringe and the putting surface, that difference can be quite high.  This makes getting a putter solidly on the ball very difficult.  So the shot needed is with a sand wedge and hit the ball in the equator.  Basically, a good skulled shot!  The bounce on the bottom of the sand wedge pushes the grass down as it moves through the fringe, and hitting the ball in the equator with the sand wedge's leading edge gives the ball a very smooth roll as it takes off.

In 1980, I caddied for Lee Trevino during an exhibition match with Gary Player at Port Elizabeth Golf Club.  Lee showed this shot to me, and I've used it ever since!

Take your sand wedge and hold it like a putter.  Get your eyes over the ball just like a putt and swing the club back and through like a putter.  But, by hovering the club with the leading edge aimed at the ball's exact equator, the collar will offer no resistance at all!
