The case of the buried ball - Rule 12-1a

You are pretty sure that your ball went into the bunker, but you cannot see the ball. How do you find a buried ball that is so deep you cannot see it? You can scrape away the sand until you find it. You can use your hand or a club to do this.

Once you have found a ball but cannot identify it as your own, you may lift the ball out of its position to identify the ball correctly.  Once identified, place the ball back in the same condition that you found it.  You may leave a part of the ball exposed before you play the shot, so you can see where the ball is located. (if playing it is what you have decided to do.) You can also take an unplayable lie, drop the ball in the bunker, penalty one shot.

At this point, you may also declare the ball unplayable, in which case you would proceed under the "ball unplayable in a hazard" rule.  This has been covered in a recent post.
