Today we talk about what you can and cannot do in testing the surface of the putting green to help determine the direction of the grain.

It is illegal to test the surface of the putting green with your hand or a club.  However, what many people don't realize is that it is perfectly legal to test the fringe.  And usually, the fringe is the same as the green, so it is really going to help determine the direction of the grain, which will help you read the break of your putt.

So the next time you are having difficulty reading the break of your putt, walk over to the fringe of the green closest to your ball and drag the putter across the grass.  If the grass feels smooth, telling the grain grows in the direction you dragged your putter head.  If the grass stands up or feels rough, that tells you the grain is in the opposite direction from the direction you moved your putter head.  Easy Peasy!
