Today I talk about putting from off the green.  How hard should you hit this shot?  Find out here!

Hitting a putt from off the green is something I seldom (if ever) do. I am a fairly good chipper, and I feel my chances of holing a chip are stronger than holing a putt that will bounce through fringe or fairway.  However, golfers who are not good chippers may prefer to put from a few feet off the green.  To decide how hard to hit the putt is always a dilemma.  But I have come up with a formula that works very well in this situation.  Measure the amount of fairway and fringe that you are putting through and add it to the putt's length.

For example, if you are putting through 6 feet of fairway and fringe, add 6 feet to the putt.  When you are doing your practice strokes to decide how hard to hit your putt, pick a spot 6 feet past the hole and look at that and not the hole.  Your subconscious will figure out how hard to hit the ball to that spot you are looking at.  And once you hit the putt, the fairway and fringe will slow the ball down before it gets onto the green, and the ball will stop near the hole!

If you practice this on a putting green, place a tee in the ground past the hole to look at when you are doing your practice swings.
