Today we discuss how to manage your game when you have more than one option to put the ball on the green.

When I was a young man and a beginner golfer, my dad watched an exhibition match between Billy Casper and Gary Player. One an easy par 4 with the front of the green guarded by a pond,  Billy hit his drive into a shallow fairway bunker.  Gary was on the fairway.  Gary hit his shot onto the green, and Bily decided to lay up short of the water. It shocked me!  It was only about 130 yards, a shot I thought he would get on the green quite easily.  Billy's third shot from about 60 yards finished 3 feet from the cup.  Gary two-putted and Billy tapped in for his par.

A Great Lesson learned.

Years later, I realized what had happened.  Billy had played to his strength.  He was a wonderful wedge player, so rather than take a risk out of the bunker ( I did not see the lie), he decided to lay up!  A great lesson in course management and playing the right shot at the right time!

In this video, the golden rule here is to choose the shot you can and the most confidence to play.  Route A would be for lower handicaps, and Route B would be for the higher handicap.

The flop shot would be played with a 60-degree lob wedge.  The ball would be forward, the weight all on the front foot, and you would control this shot with the body rotation, not the arms.  Not a shot for a higher handicap.

The chip shot is definitely the shot for the higher handicap.  Chip the ball to the part of the green where you do not have to go over the bunker.  Choose a less lofted club like a 9 iron or an 8 iron.

Enjoy!
