Today Lance Laws will discuss the significance of Patrick Reed's choice of shot when he was short of the green on the 18th hole on Sunday at the PGA Championship. We will also discuss the correct way to play that shot!
Almost every short game shot around the green will have multiple choices on how to play the shot. The decision on which shot to play depends on the player's ability and confidence in picking the easiest shot. The more short game shots you practice, the more choices you will have had that lead to a higher success rate.
Annika Sorenstam once said, after watching Tiger woods practice for a day, "Most players have two or three shots that they can play in a particular situation. Tiger has shots I have never even thought about, never mind play!" Why is that? Because Tiger has a great imagination, like the great Seve Ballesteros, and then practiced that shot repeatedly. Most golfers (myself included) tend to practice the shots we already know. How many times have you gone to a short game area and started to practice a shot you saw on TV that you have never tried to play in your life? I bet never! So be a little more creative about your short game, and don't be afraid to try something new!
