I learned the tough lesson of pitching out to the fairway the first time I played in Scotland.  My caddie kept insisting I pitch out.  The lie was not conducive to moving the ball forward. Finally, after several failed attempts, I saw the wisdom in his suggestions and played out sideways.  I started scoring better right away!

Not only is hitting the ball out a tough assignment but if you wish to move the ball towards the hole, make sure the clubface is wide open.  As the club's hosel moves through the rough, the wire gorse wraps around the hosel and closes the clubface violently.  At least by starting with the clubface open, the face will end p square at impact.

In thick rough, select the right club!  Take at least two or three clubs less than you would normally take. For example, if your shot requires a 5 iron, take a 7 iron.  Two reasons.  1.  You will need extra loft to get the ball out. 2. The ball will come out with very little backspin so that the ball will run and run, all the way to the green!

Make sure you follow through!

Hitting the ball out of thick rough requires two important things, according to Shawn Clement.  One, select the right club with enough loft to produce the ball's trajectory out without too much resistance from the long grass. And two, swing through to the target and not at the ball! So keep these two things in mind the next time you have a bad lie in the rough, and you will lower your score on that hole!
