Chipping out of the thick grass can be challenging, particularly if the grass is growing towards you.  The usual tendency is for the clubhead to get stuck in the grass, causing a poor shot.  There is a simple way to improve your Chipping out of thick rough!

The Method.

Place the shaft in a more vertical position when you chip.  This will raise the heel off the ground, and only the toe area of the club will contact the rough.  This allows the clubhead to pass much more easily through the grass with almost no "drag."   Get into a putting position with your eyes directly over the ball. You may even use your putting stroke and putting grip if you choose.

Head out to the range, find a spot where the grass is fairly thick.  Practice this position so that you will know exactly what to do in facing this shot on the course!  The big key is knowing how hard to hit these shots.  It will surprise you how easily the club slides through the grass with this shot, so you will not have to swing as hard as you think.
